For Those Who Try
By Sallyann Keith

There are yet riches
In this life for us to share:
Of loyalty rediscovered,
Of sharing so rare
We still are trembling in disbelief --
Can friendship, dormant,
Revive again so strong
Or is this reawakening
Another dream...
Illusion that will dissipate
Into another painful reality?

There are yet reasons to care:
The sudden, frank delight
In child-keen eyes
That for the moment love you.
The feeling disappears
Like fleeting deer,
But precious, clear
And honest while it holds your heart
In its bold stare,
And the words "I love you"
Trail away like fading music to the inner ear.
There are still reasons
Too deep for reasoning
To care. We still must care.

And there is life
Yet, while we can feel
And care
And share the riches
Even of the pain.
Thank God that we can feel the pain.
No narcotic has dulled the sense
Of God's awareness
Or of our echoing tension and relief.
Thank God we still can feel.

And yet, in time ...
We will relieve the pain,
Release the tension
That perhaps gives meaning now
To life that seems a loss.
There will be other ways
To sense the pulse of life,
The purpose and the cause,
Without this need to hurt
And be hurt, to suffer
and to be afraid.

In time we will not need to be afraid
To live again.
To believe again
That joy is possible
For those who still will try to love.
